Smart Cities and Sustainable Communities
This session explores how smart cities and sustainable communities are powered by integrated environmental science, data-driven infrastructure, and community-centered design. Using Cape Town and other international locations as illustrative case examples, participants will examine how innovations in energy, water management, transportation, housing, and green spaces are being leveraged to address local environmental challenges while advancing quality of life. The session highlights interdisciplinary approaches that blend science, policy, technology, and civic engagement, and considers the role of higher education and experiential learning in preparing students to engage with complex sustainability issues. It invites dialogue on how study abroad and global education experiences can equip students with the knowledge, skills, and perspectives needed to contribute to smarter, more sustainable, and more resilient futures.
