Biography
Since assuming leadership of Borough of Manhattan Community College in September 2020, President Anthony E. Munroe has galvanized college-wide initiatives to build equity and inclusion, support students’ basic needs and increase their academic and career opportunities.
One of his first actions at BMCC was to create the Race, Equity and Inclusion Steering Committee. He also established the President’s Fund for Excellence and Innovation, which builds student engagement and open conversations vital to the BMCC mission.
President Munroe is the Chair of the Board of Directors for Community Colleges for International Development and Vice Chair / Chair-Elect of Hispanic Educational Technology Services. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, he is a member of the Steering Committee of the Presidents’ Alliance for Higher Education and Immigration.
As a result of his advocacy for equity in higher education, President Munroe was named a 2022 Power Player in Education by PoliticsNY. He was also named to the City & State 2023 Higher Education Power 100 list in March and to their 2024 and 2023 Manhattan Power 100 lists in August. President Munroe has been granted honors including a 2024 Caribbean Impact Award from Schneps Media, 2022 Heritage Award from the Consulate General of Jamaica, New York, and 2020 Paragon Award for New Presidents from the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
To build transfer bridges for BMCC graduates, he has led partnerships with Morehouse College, Pace University, Baruch College, CUNY, University at Albany, SUNY, the Aspen Transfer Scholars Network, and others. He is an international expert on disparities in health care and has joined BMCC staff and faculty in events including the 2022 international conference of the Health, Wellness & Society at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.
President Munroe joined BMCC after serving as president of Essex County College, New Jersey, and Malcolm X College of the City Colleges of Chicago system. He has also served in executive leadership roles within large healthcare systems, including as president of three hospitals and as executive director of organizations such as Family Health Services in the NYC Department of Health, where he oversaw more than 100 service sites. Named one of the top 25 minority health care executives in the U.S. by Modern Healthcare Magazine, President Munroe is a first-generation U.S. citizen who grew up in the Bronx and attended NYC public schools. He holds a Master of Business Administration from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, and both a Master of Public Health and Doctorate in Education with a concentration in health education, from Columbia University, Teachers College.
