Plenary: From Reaction to Action: The Growth of Remote or Virtual Internships in the Age of COVID-19

Last spring many students on overseas internship programs as well as prospective summer interns had to quickly accommodate a shift from in-person experiences to online. However, as the pandemic has continued, the value and flexibility of online internships has made them an appealing option for universities, students, and employers. Join us for a brief overview of virtual global internships at CIEE and in higher education, and then hear from a panel of three student interns from a mix of US and international institutions and their respective host employers based in Berlin, Prague, and London. You’ll learn how students and employers have embraced the challenges of remote work, the types of opportunities and projects well-suited to online internships, the advantages/disadvantages of virtual internships in comparison to in-person experiences, and how online internships can be part of an active toolkit for broadening the scope and accessibility of work-based learning within international education.
